Milfoil Treatment Results

On May 18 2009 we treated roughly 70 acres with liquid 2-4D vs. the granular method we have used in years past. While we are encouraged by the results we recognize that our fight against Invasives must continue. The experts tell us that a consistent early treatment regimen over the course of several years is the best means to make headway against the volume of EWM found in Powers Lake.

It is important to understand that it is highly unlikely that we will ever totally eradicate EWM from the lake. The best we can do is to minimize the spread and hope that the native plants will reestablish themselves which will help to minimize the growth of EWM.

While we are cautiously optimistic of the treatment results we understand that it may take several years before we know if we are winning the battle. Our intent is to document the results each year here on the web page so we can better measure our progress.

To help put this into perspective; a pre-treatment survey of the lake was performed which indicated the presence of EWM in the areas highlighted in green on the enclosed MAP. This link shows the results of our post- treatment survey which was performed in July. While these appear to be outstanding results, we intend to continue our diligence and will dedicate the necessary resources in our attempt to significantly reduce the amount of EWM for the foreseeable future.

Also of concern is the discovery and presence of another pesky invasive plant identified as Curly Leaf
Pond Weed
which is identified by the red markings as “CLP” on this map. CLP is also a very aggressive, non-native plant and we have roughly 2 acres in the lake. The bad news is that CLP has been identified in our lake. The good news is we found it relatively early and can take steps to minimize its spread. CLP is much like Milfoil and if left untreated has the potential to take over the lake. To learn more about CLP click here.

We are already working on our treatment plans for 2010 and intend to treat for both EWM and CLP. We have discussed our treatment results with the DNR and our applicator and received positive feedback and support. We are also in the process of applying for a Grant to help fund our treatment efforts for 2010.

Our best defense against Invasives is to do a better job at the boat launches by monitoring and preventing the introduction of unwanted Invasives Once they are in the lake; it is too late and very expensive to try to eradicate and control. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”!!!

In addition, the DPL intends to deliver an email on the subject to all registered DPL members, so please provide your contact information and the District will keep you informed. Register Now!

No-Wake Ruling

The town of Randall rescinded the slow no-wake ordinance by a vote of 4 to1 in November of 2008. As a result, the Town of Randall is considering the creation of a committee of volunteers to review our Water Use Ordinance, often referred to as “Chapter 20”. For more details on this issue look for updates on this web site, as well as the Town of Randall web site. www.townofrandall.com

Pier Ordinance

Governor Doyle passed a new law affecting all pier owners. All lakefront property owners will have three years to comply with a new law passed by Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle in the summer of 2008. A summary of the particulars is available here.

New Law Requiring Boating Certificates for Minors

The Wisconsin Legislature has recently passed a Mandatory Boating Education Bill. This bill requires anyone born on or after 1-1-1989 and at least 16 years of age to have a boating safety education certificate to operate a motorboat on Wisconsin’s waterways. For more information about the boating safety classes click here.
